Making Britain the best place in the world to do business

Marcus Booth No government can run business and create wealth. What governments can do is create the best possible conditions for wealth creation. So I believe the next Conservative government should set itself a simple economic objective: to make Britain the best place in the world to do business

Rt Hon David Cameron MP

Conservative Business Relations is a forum for allowing leaders of the business community to engage with the Conservative Party and discuss policy issues. Through a regular programme of sectoral and regional events, business leaders can discuss their concerns and ideas with key members of the Parliamentary Conservative Party. Recent events have included policy seminars for the industrial and manufacturing sector and a networking reception for the public affairs industry.

Our Economic Recovery Plan

In a speech to business leaders, David Cameron outlined our plans to repair Britain's economy and stressed a "full-scale recovery" was needed.

He called for a two-pronged approach:

- Immediate action to protect employees, savers, families and homeowners, including a Fair Fuel Stabiliser proper welfare support

- Long-term measures to fix the damage done to our public finances by Mr. Brown's economic mismanagement, and to ensure we always "live within our means."

Amongst the short-term measures he proposed was the introduction of bankruptcy protection for firms, based on the American Chapter 11 scheme.

This, he stressed, would give firms troubled by the credit crunch "breathing space" to restructure their finances and save jobs.

"At a time when we've got economic difficulty and companies may get into these sorts of problems, we ought to be taking action and showing leadership now to try to save those jobs."

In the face of the credit crunch, he noted that the country is facing the prospect of rising unemployment. The country, he stressed, is poorly prepared for unemployment and it is therefore imperative that the country acts now. David Cameron set out plans by the Conservative Party in a detailed Employment Plan to help businesses cope with the economic downturn and provide people with the required support to find long – term work.

The Conservative Party is undertaking a sector by sector analysis of UK business in order to understand better the most important issues to ensure competitive global performance.  As part of that process we are holding a seminar for the Financial and Professional Services sector with our Shadow Minister to the Treasury, Mark Hoban MP, to seek the input of local businesses in the region.

The event will take place on Wednesday 3rd September from 12:00pm to 3:00pm at Southampton Solent University.

As with most Conservative Business Relations events, there is no charge for this seminar, but places are limited by room capacity.  If you belong to a local business in the Financial and Professional services sector and would like to attend the discussion, please email hari.nathur@conservatives.com or call on 020 7984 8136.

Small Business Support Survey

Conservatives have launched a nation wide survey on how government can best help small firms. As millions of small businesses struggle with rising costs and red tape, Mark Prisk MP, Shadow Minister for Small Business, is leading an extensive nationwide survey to see how a Conservative Government could best help SME’s.

The survey covers vital issues including access to finance, business advice, grants and government contracts. It follows the publication of the Richard Report, last month, which outlined a radical programme of reform government support for small business.
